Our Editorial and Fact-Checking Standards
This site exists to be the clearest, most accurate, and most current explanation of Norbert's Gambit for Canadians. Money topics deserve care, so here is exactly how we research, check, and maintain what you read.
We verify against primary sources
Every fee, broker mechanic, tax rule, and number on this site is checked against a primary source before it is published. That means the fund provider for ETF details, each broker's own help centre and pricing pages for how journaling works and what it costs, and the Canada Revenue Agency for anything to do with tax.
Where a detail cannot be confirmed from a primary source, we say so plainly rather than state it as fact. You will see phrases like "confirm with your broker" in those spots, and we mean them.
We keep pages current
Broker fees and journaling processes change, sometimes with little notice. A guide that was right last year can be wrong today. Each page shows a "last reviewed" date, and we update the underlying facts when brokers change their rules. When you read that a broker charges a certain fee or journals a certain way, it reflects what we could confirm as of that review date.
We are neutral and not paid to recommend anyone
We do not take payment to rank one broker, fund, or service above another. When we say a particular broker is easier or cheaper for the gambit, that is our read of the facts, not a paid placement. The aim is to help you keep more of your own money, full stop.
We explain the risks, not just the upside
Norbert's Gambit saves money, but it has trade-offs: a few days of waiting, exchange-rate risk in the reverse direction, tax reporting in non-registered accounts, and amounts where it simply is not worth the effort. We cover those openly. A guide that only sells the upside is not doing its job.
This is information, not advice
Everything here is general information to help you understand how Norbert's Gambit works. It is not personalized financial, investment, or tax advice. Your situation is your own, rules change, and the right move depends on details we cannot see. For decisions that matter, confirm with your broker and, where tax is involved, a qualified tax professional or the CRA.
