Norbert's Gambit on Wealthsimple: Step-by-Step (2026)
Yes, you can now do Norbert's Gambit on Wealthsimple. This is new. After years of not supporting it, Wealthsimple launched a built-in feature in beta in early 2026. You buy DLR on the web, use the in-app Journal button to move it to DLR.U, then sell. It costs $9.95 plus tax per journal, supports only the DLR and DLR.U pair, and requires an active U.S.-dollar account. Any guide that still says Wealthsimple does not support the gambit is out of date.
For the general method, see the step-by-step guide. This page is specific to Wealthsimple.
The steps at Wealthsimple
- Use the web, not the app. The journaling feature is web-only right now. Log in to Wealthsimple on a browser.
- Buy DLR. Search for the Global X U.S. Dollar Currency ETF and buy DLR with Canadian dollars. Wealthsimple is commission-free, so the buy costs nothing extra.
- Journal to DLR.U. Open the DLR security details, select Journal, enter the number of shares, review, and submit. The fee is $9.95 plus tax, charged in Canadian dollars, so you need enough Canadian cash in the account or the request fails.
- Wait, then sell. The journal takes about two business days. The shares show as pending and cannot be traded during processing. Once it completes, sell DLR.U for U.S. dollars.
To go the other way, USD to CAD, you start with DLR.U and journal to DLR.
What you need first: a USD account
The gambit on Wealthsimple requires an active U.S.-dollar account in your profile, which you enable in your account settings on the web. The cost of that account depends on your plan:
- Core plan: about $10 per month for the U.S.-dollar account.
- Premium and Generation plans: the U.S.-dollar account is included at no extra charge.
If you are on Core and would open a U.S.-dollar account only for the gambit, factor that $10 per month into whether it is worth it.
What it costs at Wealthsimple
- Journaling fee: $9.95 plus tax per journal request, charged in Canadian dollars.
- Commissions: none. Wealthsimple does not charge trading commissions.
- USD account: $10 per month on Core, free on Premium and Generation.
Wealthsimple's own built-in conversion runs around 1.5% on smaller amounts, falling toward zero on very large ones. So the gambit's sweet spot here is roughly $10,000 to $100,000, where the flat $9.95 fee clearly beats the percentage charge. Below about $800 to $1,000 it is not worth it. Check your case with the calculator.
Accounts and limits
The feature works with DLR and DLR.U only, not other dual-listed securities. It requires the U.S.-dollar account described above, and it is reported not to be available in RRIF accounts. Because the feature is still in beta, confirm the current terms in Wealthsimple's help centre before you rely on any detail.
